How do you feel about the phrase busy? Being busy? Or even better “too busy” or “so busy”? It’s become so much the norm. Someone asks how you are and it is so normal to reply with “yes I’m so busy.”  Do you wear being so busy almost like a badge of honour? We all have times when we’re busy. But if the thought of adding something else to your day makes you want to laugh or cry, then that’s when you need to do something about it.

Imagine the scenario, you bump into a friend or get chatting on message or something. They suggest going for coffee sometime. If your immediate response is that you’re too busy, how would that friend feel. In other words you’re saying that you don’t have time for them. It might be that you don’t have time available that week, but what about the week after, or the week after that?

We’ve created a “cult of busy:” There’s a cultural expectation that, if you’re not stressed or busy, you’re slacking. Also, somehow saying I’m so busy has become the go-to excuse to get out of work and social commitments. Having things to do isn’t bad. But busyness without a purpose is. Feeling that you’ve got to be busy all the time, is often accompanied by feelings of being frazzled, overwhelmed or simply constantly tired. I know this first hand, because that used to be me and I don’t want it for you.

So let’s rewrite that story of being busy with a new message. In this training today, I’m going to give you 5 reasons you don’t want to tell yourself and others that you’re busy.

Your Mind Believes Everything You Tell It.

If you tell yourself that you are busy, that becomes your reality. You will feel and act busy. You might not make time for things that are not urgent and instead will survive in a state of panic and overwhelm.

You Forget To Take Care of Yourself

How many times have you said, I’m too busy to relax in a bath! How can I sit down with a cuppa? Self-care and self-love should be non-negotiable-not just when you think you have time.

You Become Emotionally Unavailable.

Have you ever tried having a conversation with someone who is only half listening because they are mentally doing their shopping list or checking something on their phone? When you’re busy and trying to get 5 things at once, it makes it very difficult to concentrate and be in the moment.

You Don’t Make Time To Simply Be 

It’s so important for us all to take time to relax. Take time to just sit. It might be with a cuppa, it might be with your journal or a good book. Time to relax is so therapeutic and healing in a stressful world.

Your Vision Gets Blurry 

I mean this metaphorically. When you’re rushing around, its very easy to get caught up in your list of things to do and you might even forget why you’re doing in the first place. If your life is go go go- how often to you stop and question whether that activity is really the best use of your time?

I’m all about creating a life that you love and how you view your life and the decisions you make, makes all the difference with this. What it comes down to is. We all have things to do. That’s part of being an adult, right. I think that’s where the phrase adulting is hard comes from! We’ve got responsibilities, things to do, duties, hats to wear, roles to fill- however you want to say it.
